Scalewatcher Fitting and Operating Instructions
Please read thoroughly before installation
Components.
a. One Scalewatcher unit with a 3 metre mains connection cable and plug.
b. One 3m length of signal cable.
c. Two screws and wall plugs to mount the unit on the wall via keyhole slots on the back of the unit.
d. 4 cable ties (plus 2 spare ties) to secure signal cable to the pipe.
Installation site.
Locate the incoming main water pipe and choose a position for the coil (see notes below). The unit can be installed up to 1 metre away from the pipe and requires a mains electrical outlet within 3 metres. The coil can be installed on copper, plastic steel or lead pipes, however when putting on steel or lead please call the Scalewatcher help line below to confirm that the unit size is adequate. If you have a choice between plastic or copper pipe choose the plastic even if it is a bigger pipe as Scalewatcher is most effective on plastic. The pipe on which the coil is to be placed can be vertical, horizontal or diagonal.
Important notes affecting performance.
- For optimum results you require a minimum 10cm length of straight pipe clear of fittings, valves and if possible earth bonding clips. Although the coil only requires 5cm of pipe you must have
2.5cm of clear pipe at each end.
- Where possible keep the coil at least 15cm away from large iron and steel objects, especially electric motors in case it lessens the efficiency of the Scalewatcher unit. (Small steel pipes and sides of washing machines or cookers etc. are not a problem)
- Any excess signal cable should be cut off and not left loose or coiled.
- If it is not possible to fit the Scalewatcher unit on the incoming mains cold water feed pipe; important equipment to protect for example is the hot water boiler or washing machine remembering to install the Scalewatcher unit away from the equipment.
- If you are unable to install the unit before the pipework divides, it is possible to treat two pipes by using a single coil on each pipe. See installation diagram.
Mounting the unit.
You can mount the unit on any convenient surface and it can be installed at any angle, above or below the coil but should be placed at least 15cm away from the coil. You can either mount the unit with the keyhole slots on the back (using the screws and template provided) or by using the side mounting tabs. To do this remove the tabs from rear of the Scalewatcher and then reverse the tabs so the unit can be fixed directly to the wall.
Installing the coil.
To fit the signal cable, strip one end of the signal cable to expose approximately 1cm of bare copper wire. Twist this wire together, push back one of the terminal buttons and push the wire fully into either coloured terminal hole then release the button, polarity is not important. Secure the signal cable to the pipe using one of the cable ties provided, then coil the signal cable tightly round the pipe with 10 or 11 close turns (more or less will reduce performance) and secure using a second cable tie. Continue winding making a second layer on top of the first layer. Trim excess signal cable, bare the wire and insert cable into the remaining terminal.
Mains connection.
If your Scalewatcher is to be installed in a bathroom or a damp atmosphere, ensure that it is installed by a qualified electrican (the electrical circuitry within the unit is coated with a water proof resin, making it safe for use in such environments). Connect the unit to the mains supply and switch on. The unit is designed to be switched on permanently.
Do not cut the mains cable until you are satisfied with the units performance as units with short cables cannot be exchanged.
Indicator Lights.
The red mains signal light indicates power is on and the green signal light indicates the Scalewatcher is functioning correctly and will only light up if the signal cable is connected. If either of these lights fail, please check the fuse and all electrical connections.
